In 2023, under the auspices of Professors Erika Dyck and Simonne Horwitz, Sesan Michael Johnson completed an MSc in Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies. His thesis is titled "Cholera Epidemic, Government’s Interventions and Public Responses in the 1970s, Ìbàdàn, Nigeria." The research shows a deeper understanding of how health was perceived, formed, negotiated, resisted, nurtured, lived, and contested during a cholera epidemic.
By trade, Sesan uses interdisciplinary approaches to study Nigeria/Africa and the African Diaspora at the intersection of African philosophy, global health politics, epidemics, pandemics, syndemic, securitized diseases, health informatics, death cultural materialities, and medical humanities. He's a multiple awards-winning researcher. In March 2018 he received the Brian Bertotti Award from Virginia University of Technology, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA. He was one of the 3 finalists of the 2019 McCarthy Award for History of Medicine Research by the Royal College of Physicians, University of Edinburgh, UK. In 2021 he was awarded a research fund as a member of the History of Health & Social Justice Research Group, Dept of History, University of Saskatchewan, Canada. Sesan was a recipient of the 2022/2023 Interdisciplinary Studies - Devolved Scholarship and the 2023 InterD Student Support Fund at the University of Saskatchewan. Recently, he has presented academic papers at conferences organized by the University of Saskatchewan, Canada; the American Graduate Schools, Paris, France; the University of Manchester UK; University of Edinburgh, Scotland; Oxford University UK; Virginia University of Tech, USA., etc. Also, his thoughts have appeared in respected academic journals and newspapers. As a public health historian, he has been featured on NTA Ibadan, Impact Business Radio, LeadCity FM, BCOS TV, Oluyole FM, Impact Africa Television, NAIJA FM, and Beat FM to analyze public health issues and international health developments.
Sesan obtained MSc (Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies) and BA (History and International Relations) from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria respectively.
