Tegan complets a Mitacs internship at SaskPower’s Aboriginal Relations Department
Tegan recently completed a three-month Mitacs internship at SaskPower’s Aboriginal Relations Department in Regina. During her internship, she was exposed to various community files that SaskPower is working on, and learned about the Crown corporation’s approach to engaging and partnering with Indigenous communities more broadly. She had numerous opportunities for learning, including presenting on the duty to consult to SaskPower’s Project Development Office alongside the Director of the department, Wayne Rude.
During her time in Regina, Tegan was welcomed to attend SaskPower’s Aboriginal Procurement Annual Information Session to learn about how SaskPower is working to expand its partnerships with Indigenous businesses. She also had the privilege to attend a two-day Saskatchewan Government Relations workshop on implementing the duty to consult in the province, as well as a Provincial-Federal roundtable with the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan Executive to discuss consultation with the Métis.
For her research, Tegan reached out to interview SaskPower employees whose work involves Indigenous engagement at a variety of levels, and she facilitated two workshops on the duty to consult and engagement as they relate to SaskPower’s operations. Upon completion of her two Mitacs internships, Tegan is now moving into the data analysis and writing phase of her research. She is grateful for the warm welcome she received at SaskPower, not only from the Aboriginal Relations Department, but also from the wider Corporate Relations team."
