Welcome to Helen Baulch’s lab. We’re located in the Global Institute for Water Security and the School of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Saskatchewan, in sunny Saskatoon. Our focus is on understanding the drivers of deteriorating water quality and identifying solutions.

About Us

Our Team

We're a diverse team, working on diverse pieces of the water quality and broader sustainability puzzles. Our work spans biogeochemistry and limnology through to wetland ecology, agricultural management and social sciences. We aim to inform water systems biophysical understanding, and design socially and economically acceptable interventions to improve water quality. Our recent work spans: developing future scenarios for prairie landscapes, supporting drinking water management and decisions on lake treatment, and understanding cyanobacterial bloom ecology, including also extensive work on wetlands, and changing winter. We work with end users – including agricultural producers, industry and government to help understand needs, and codevelop our research questions and approaches, an approach that also helps ensure our science is useful, and used to help tackle important challenges.

Laboratory

We have a well-equipped lab, with a SmartChem® Discrete Chemical Analyzer, GHG-GC and associated evacuation and flushing system, MIMS, and a suite of water quality monitoring sensor systems that have been used for long-term monitoring within Saskatchewan. We are handily co-located with the National Hydrology Research Centre of Environment and Climate Change Canada and also have access to the outstanding lab facilities elsewhere on campus.

Mission

Global change affects water in every possible way. Our work helps understand the basic science and applied solutions that will help guide decision making to protect water, water quality, and ecosystem services associated with water.

We value water, and target our work to understanding the science of water, threats to water, and opportunities to restore and protect waters. We want to help ensure healthy, swimmable, and drinkable waters for generations to come.

We value work-life balance, and know that it can be hard but try to keep this as part of our dialogue and as one of our priorities.

We do this to make sure our work matters and help provide recommendations, working towards solutions with diverse decisionmakers.

Our priorities

We connect personally. We are a strong network of support. We care about other people in our group and beyond and are surrounded by a sense of caring. We want each other to succeed. We aim to be there for each other for years and decades to come.

We care about what we do and share common goals and interests. We care about water quality and the environment. We enjoy the outdoors and share our experiences. We are invested in our work. We value learning and education, so we continue to invest in teaching and learning in each of our diverse roles. We also talk about our lives beyond the lab.

We have many strong bonds, and we cheer each other on.
