Three Main Pieces of the Engineering Design Mutualism Lab
The three main pieces of CFI-funded infrastructure that the Engineering Design Mutualism Lab (EDML) operates are the mobile design lab, the companion on-campus laboratory with a workshop area, located at the College of Engineering, at the University of Saskatchewan, and the stored equipment for the modular lab.
1) The mobile design lab
The mobile design lab is a custom utility trailer that can be transported to communities. The lab team engages with communities through discussion, idea sharing, and designing together on-site. The mobile design lab will travel to urban parks and remote rural areas to make connections with different communities. The lab team will encourage youth and adults in communities to explore their interests in engineering, art, and design.
2) The on-campus laboratory with a workshop area
Students and researchers from many study areas work together and with community groups. They consider the social, cultural, and environmental aspects of design. The welcoming, accessible, and inclusive lab contains idea-sharing spaces and design technology. Hands-on design occurs in the workshop space, with access to drafting and art design areas, power tools, and a CNC router.
3) The modular lab
Displays and furniture for large events held outside the on-campus laboratory.
The aim of the EDML is to involve Saskatchewan people, especially Indigenous youth and adults, in engineering design.
