
USask hires new Fruit Breeder
Dr. Anže Švara joined the department as the new fruit breeder in the fruit breeding program on January 12, 2025.
Anže (pronounced “on-jay”) specializes in the genetics and genomics of apples, with a focus on unlocking and characterizing apple genetic diversity to streamline the breeding of disease-resistant cultivars. Anže’s internationally recognized work spans plant pathology, stress tolerance, breeding, and biodiversity, addressing both current and future challenges in horticulture.
Prior to joining AgBio, Anže was a postdoctoral researcher in the Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology Section at Cornell University. He holds a BSc and MSc in biotechnology from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and a PhD in bioengineering from KU Leuven, Belgium.
