I am currently working on projects studying anatomy and physiology function of epithelial cells including ionocyte and muticiliated cells. By using immunohistological methods for anatomy and Ussing chamber and SIET (selective ion microelectrode techniques) for physiological studies in human airway epithelial cell culture, mouse, and pig model, I try to understand the role of ionocyte cells in balancing airway liquid surface and how it affect multicilated cells in mucociliary clearance. Ultimately, the project goal is understanding the potential targets, ionocyte cells and their progenitors, for gene-based therapies for cystic fibrosis patients.
