Ms. Fina Nelson BSc, MSc
Research Technician Department of Plant SciencesFina is a Research Technician with the LQU Research Team at the University of Saskatchewan, managing wet chemistry and analytical labs. She received her Master’s of Science in Geochemistry and Bachelor’s of Science in Geology from the University of Saskatchewan. Fina has a background in quality control and geochemistry, experience with a wide variety of instruments and equipment, and a strong interest in promoting a safety culture. As a research technician with LQU, Fina’s primary goal is to facilitate the research of students and staff. This includes assisting with experimental design, troubleshooting procedures, acquiring or problem-solving supplies and equipment, training in lab and safety protocols, and analysis by HPLC, GC, and/or TOF-MS. Project topics include foods, oilseed and pulse crops, fermentation, and ethanol refinement. Fina’s technical skillset has been an asset in food and agriculture research teams. Before joining the LQU Research Team, Fina was Lab Manager for the NSERC Industrial Research Chair Aqueous and Environmental Geochemistry Lab. As a lab manager and from previous work as a research assistant, she has participated in stable isotope, aqueous, rare earth metal, and environmental geochemistry. Fina is driven by her curiosity and love of new challenges and will continue to participate in the centre of innovative and practical research to improve the lives of Canadian and Saskatchewan people.
