SaskPower Value Based Reliability Project

With ever increasing reliance on electricity, country’s economy is highly sensitive to supply reliability. The reliability of a power system largely depends on the investment made and optimal reliability is often related both with investment and worth (value) of electricity to the customers. Determination of cost/worth of electricity to customers will be highly useful in deciding where to improve reliability by additional investment and where to leave the reliability level unperturbed. This project aims to determine the customer’s cost/worth of electricity using recent advances in ICT technologies and propose a simplified method to estimate the same without repeatedly carrying out extensive customer surveys, and make investment decisions based on worth of electricity.

Energy Storage

NSERC Energy Storage Technology Network Project

The NSERC Energy Storage Technology (NEST) network is a Pan-Canadian network of 15 Universities and 26 industry and government partners focused on the future of energy storage- an essential technology in the global transition to clean energy. Our research team at the University of Saskatchewan is focused on the reliability assessment of the integration of energy storage system (ESS) into the electrical grid. Reliability modelling of ESS and the assessment of electric power systems with ESS will be the focus. Present work being carried out include the reliability modelling of the state of charge of the compressed air energy storage (CAES) considering different operating strategies and different market scenarios with increasing wind energy penetration, the reliability modelling of the flywheel in electric power system operation etc.

Cowessess First Nation Wind-Battery Project

This project has the objective to demonstrate a wind-storage system that can provide continuous and predictable output for on-grid off-grid applications.
