Building Northern Capacity through Entrepreneurship

About Us

Who Are We?

The BNCE Project Management Team was formed in 2014 and was comprised of University of Saskatchewan researchers and community partners. The Edwards School of Business led this project.

What Did We Do?

In partnership with Northerners, we explored how entrepreneurship can help develop social and economic capacity in Northern Saskatchewan communities. Through this collaborative effort, we have learned more about the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Northern Saskatchewan.

Why Did We Do This?

We wanted to work with our community research partners to produce outputs they could use to benefit their communities. We learned lessons about the Northern undocumented economy, about how Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizational governance systems can work more effectively together, and about the goals and aspirations that the adults and the youth have for the future of their communities. We also learned more about how to respectfully and productively work with Indigenous communities to conduct research they can use. We also did this work because of the respect and admiration we have for the Northern Saskatchewan people who are working so diligently to secure the futures of their communities.

How Did We Do This?

We conducted research workshops and interviews involving approximately 480 adults and high school students across seven Northern Saskatchewan communities. We used innovative research methods such as focus groups, mapping and flashcard exercises, Photovoice, and OurVoice to engage with participants in inviting and productive ways.
