Dr. Xiaodong Liang is a Full Professor and Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Technology Solutions for Energy Security in Remote, Northern, and Indigenous Communities at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada. She is IEEE Fellow (2026) and IET Fellow (2022). 

Dr. Liang obtained her Ph.D. degree from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada in 2013. From 1995 to 1999, she served as a Lecturer at Northeastern University, Shenyang, China. In October 2001, she joined SLB (Schlumberger) in Edmonton, AB, Canada, and was promoted to Principal Power Systems Engineer in 2009 with this World's leading oilfield services company; she worked with Schlumberger for almost 12 years until August 2013. From 2013 to 2019, she was with Washington State University in Vancouver, WA, USA and Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL, Canada as an Assistant Professor and later an Associate Professor. In July 2019, she joined the University of Saskatchewan, where she is currently a Full Professor and Canada Research Chair. She was an Adjunct Professor with Memorial University of Newfoundland from 2019 to 2022.

Dr. Liang's research interests include power systems, renewable energy and electric machines. She has published over 290 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and 6 book chapters. She also holds 3 granted US and Canadian patents.

She has served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering since Jan. 1, 2026 to present, Co-Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering from Jan. 1, 2025 to Dec. 31, 2025, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications since April 2022 to present. She served as the Chair of the Power System Engineering Committee from Jan. 2024 to present, the Technical Committee Papers Review Chair (TCPRC) of the Power System Protection Committee from Jan. 2024 to Dec. 2025, and the TCPRC of the Power System Engineering Committee from Jan. 2021 to Dec. 2023, IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS). Currently, she also serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications (2013 - present), IEEE Access (2019 - present), IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Industrial Electronics (2021 - present), IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy (2023-present), and IEEE Open Journal of Industry Applications (2022-2025). Dr. Liang is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. 

In June 2020, Dr. Liang was awarded Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC), and her CRC was renewed in June 2025; the Canada Research Chairs Program invests up to $311 million per year to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds, and chairholders aim to achieve research excellence in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Since 2019, Dr. Liang has remained on the Stanford List of the World’s Top 2% Scientists. In April 2022, Dr. Liang received the New Researcher Award at the University of Saskatchewan; this institutional level award is to recognize significant contributions to knowledge or artistic creativity, two awards may be presented annually. In Jun 2024, Dr. Liang Received 2023/2024 the High Impact Scholarly Work Award at the College of Engineering, University of Saskatchewan. In May 2025, Dr. Liang received 2024 Highly Ranked Scholar - Prior Five Years by ScholarGPS in the specialty of "Induction Motor", and she ranked #2 in this specialty worldwide.
