Dr. Xiaodong Liang is a Full Professor and Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Technology Solutions for Energy Security in Remote, Northern, and Indigenous Communities at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada.

Dr. Liang obtained her Ph.D. degree from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada in 2013. From 1995 to 1999, she served as a Lecturer at Northeastern University, Shenyang, China. In October 2001, she joined Schlumberger in Edmonton, AB, Canada, and was promoted to Principal Power Systems Engineer in 2009 with this World's leading oil field service company; she worked with Schlumberger for almost 12 years until August 2013. From 2013 to 2019, she was with Washington State University in Vancouver, WA, USA and Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL, Canada as an Assistant Professor and later an Associate Professor. In July 2019, she joined the University of Saskatchewan, where she is currently a Full Professor and Canada Research Chair. She was an Adjunct Professor with Memorial University of Newfoundland from 2019 to 2022.

Dr. Liang's research interests include power systems, renewable energy and electric machines. She has published 4 book chapters, and more than 230 refereed journal/conference papers. She also holds 3 granted US and Canadian patents.

She serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications since 2022. From Jan. 2022, she has been the Chair and the Technical Committee Papers Review Chair for the Power System Engineering Committee, IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS). Currently, she also serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications and IEEE Industry Applications Magazine (since 2013), IEEE Access (since 2019), IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Industrial Electronics (since 2021), IEEE Open Journal of Industry Applications (since 2022), and IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy (since 2023). Dr. Liang is a Senior Member of IEEE, and a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. 

In June 2020, Dr. Liang was awarded Tier 2 Canada Research Chair; the Canada Research Chairs Program invests up to $311 million per year to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds, and chairholders aim to achieve research excellence in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences. In August 2022, Dr. Liang was elected a Fellow of IET (The Institution of Engineering and Technology); the IET fellowship is awarded only to individuals who have demonstrated recent significant achievement(s) sustained at high levels for a period of at least five years in engineering, technology, or related disciplines relevant to the IET. In April 2022, Dr. Liang received the New Researcher Award at the University of Saskatchewan; this institutional level award is to recognize significant contributions to knowledge or artistic creativity, two awards may be presented annually. Since 2019, Dr. Liang has remained on the Stanford List of the World’s Top 2% Scientists, which speaks to her strong research impact in the global map of excellence.
