The Sheldon Lab, located in the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine, investigates emerging opportunistic bacterial pathogens and the nutritional factors that support their survival and pathogenicity. Our research focuses on Gram-negative, multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms, with the goal of understanding how these pathogens persist and cause disease in the host.
We are particularly interested in the mechanisms that drive pathogen survival and virulence, with an emphasis on the role of histamine and essential nutrient metals at the host-pathogen interface. By studying how these bacteria adapt to host environments and evade immune defenses, the Sheldon Lab seeks to inform new approaches to combat antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease.
