Photovoice Project
Overview
This qualitative photovoice study documented the visual, gendered, historical and cultural (local) meanings and experiences of healthy body weight and healthy body image for 45 Saskatchewan Aboriginal women and 20 Saskatchewan Aboriginal female youth of the seven BTC communities including: Little Pine First Nation, Lucky Man Cree Nation, Moosomin First Nation, Mosquito Grizzly Bears Head Lean Man First Nation, Poundmaker Cree Nation, Red Pheasant First Nation and Sweetgrass First Nation.
This study was established in 2007 and developed using a collaborative model with Battleford Tribal Councils Indian Health Services (BTCIHS) formerly Miwayawin Health Services, university-based researchers and Battleford Tribal Council (BTC) community stakeholders and members. The goal of this research has been to identify, analyze and disseminate local knowledge about the cultural and visual contexts of healthy body weight and healthy body image from the perspective of First Nations women in the region.
This study consists of 3 key phases as follows:

- BTC Women's Study - Photovoice Poster - This poster was developed for participants and BTCIHS as a travelling photo exhibit.
- BTC Women's Study: Photo Journal - A photojournal was created for participants and BTCIHS to showcase the photos and stories of the women and youth. This book serves as both a commemoration of the participants but also a health promotional and awareness item that can be accessed by community members.
- Promotional Study Items - We also had various promotional items created for participants and BTCIHS to promote the photovoice project.
