Introduction

Who we are.

The Advanced Materials Research Laboratory represents a center for cutting-edge Materials Science research located in the Physics Building at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. Our focus is on the study of electronic properties of new materials for use in creating consumer electronic devices.

Spintronic semiconductor systems

  • Exploiting the intrinsic spin of electrons to carry information
  • Investigate the effects of device fabrication
  • Study the cause of negative magnetoresistance
  • Study magnetic properties of organic materials
  • Devices include: spin valves, spin transistors, and spin LEDs

Organic Semiconductors

  • Characterization and optimization of organic materials for use in:
  • Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs)
  • Organic and Quantum Dot photovoltaics
  • Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs)
  • New device architectures

Surface Science

  • Investigate surface topology on the nano-scale and electronic properties using:
  • Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)
  • Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)
  • Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE)

X-ray Spectroscopy Techniques

  • Probe the density of states of materials using synchrotron-based X-ray radiation
  • Absorption spectroscopy (XAS)
  • Emission spectroscopy (XES)
  • Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)
  • Diffraction (XRD)
  • Facilities for these experiments are partially provided by the Canadian Light Source.
