Matt Mogle

PhD student

Matt will explore impacts of wildfire smoke on songbird migration with co-supervision with Dr. Ann McKellar. Prior to beginning his PhD, he served as a Biologist for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at the Oklahoma Fish & Wildlife Conservation Office. He completed his M.Sc. (2021) at Mount Allison University where he studied shorebird staging ecology and his B.S. (2017) at Baker University in Kansas, USA.

Andrew Moore

M.Sc student

Andrew will be focusing on how wildfire particulate matter impacts thermoregulatory capacity in house sparrows!

Bronte Bowling

M.Sc student

I'm Bronte Bowling, a master's student in biology originally from Manchester, England. Under the supervision of Catie and co-supervision of Christy Morrissey, my research investigates how pesticide spray applications affect farmland birds in prairie ecosystems. Specifically, I’m evaluating how inhalation and dermal exposure to pesticides influence avian metabolism, including changes in activity levels and vocal behavior. This involves a controlled lab exposure experiment and field-based bioacoustic monitoring to assess shifts in vocal acidity across cropland habitats.

Past Undergraduate Research Projects

Dean Wiebe - Changes in red squirrel morphology over 80 years (BIOL 480) and Comparison of flight in birds and bats (BIOL 479)
Faith Greva - Wing morphology and migratory distance in shorebirds (BIOL 480)
Prerita Sharma - Wing morphology, flight muscle morphology, and migratory distance in songbirds (BIOL 380)
I'm currently searching for a MSc or PhD student who is interested in working on the impacts of wildfire smoke on avian respiratory physiology! This project will involve lab and field-based work! Please reach out if you are interested! Also, check out this website (courtesy of Aerin Jacob) for external funding opportunities!
