Facilities Supporting Our Research

Our department is located in the Collaborative Sciences Research Building! This building is aptly named, as we as a department share equipment across labs and work in open-concept lab environments! In addition to our collaborative nature, we also have multiple facilities that are unique to the Biology department!

Facility for Applied Avian Research (FAAR)

At the University of Saskatchewan we are fortunate to have a facility devoted to keeping wild songbirds and shorebirds in captivity! This facility has indoor and outdoor aviaries and a walk-in cold room to keep live animals, allowing us to ask all sorts of questions about physiology, behaviour, and development!

Check out a video tour courtesy of Dr. Christy Morrissey (who does amazing grassland bird eco-toxicoloty work)!

Microscopy Facility

Much of our research brings us back into the lab to investigate what is happening at the tissue level! We rely on the Microscopy Facility in our department to support this work, primarily using upright brightfield and fluorescent microscopes! Our facility is also fortunate to have 2 confocal microscopes and a transmission electron microscope (time to scheme more projects)!

Wind Tunnel & Animal Facilities

In our animal facilities we have multiple freshwater and saltwater systems that support fish and invertebrate work! We also have a vivarium for holding hibernating ground squirrels and a wind tunnel for flying insects, and soon, songbirds! Our wind tunnel is currently being rebuilt, but should be up and running summer 2025!
