Purpose and Objectives

The Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS) Research Chair in Métis Governance and Policy serves as a dynamic hub of research, community engagement, and policy development dedicated to advancing Métis governance. Funded in partnership by the University of Saskatchewan and the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan government, the chair is more than a single position, but aims to be a collaborative network of scholars, students, and community leaders working together to address critical issues in Métis governance.  

The chair operates at arm’s length from the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S), and has a commitment to advancing research, education, and community engagement in Métis governance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Research: Conduct and publish research on Métis governance, ensuring a Métis vision of governance by developing research capacity for addressing future and emerging issues specific to governance and nation building. 
  • Student Supervision: Mentoring students interested in Métis governance, guiding their Master of Public Policy (MPP) or PhD thesis projects. By supervising and nurturing the next generation of scholars, the Chair ensures that students are well-equipped to become future leaders and policymakers within the Métis community. 
  • Program Development: Establishing a Métis executive governance training program for MN-S staff and elected officials. This program will empower Métis leaders with the knowledge and skills needed for effective governance, fostering a shared vision and best practices in governance that reflect Métis values and traditions. 
  • Internship Program: Working with staff at JSGS, USask, and the University of Regina to develop a cooperative internship program for Métis undergraduate and graduate students. 
  • Mentorship: Developing opportunities for Métis students to explore post-secondary education and careers in Métis governance and public policy. 
  • Teaching: Developing and teaching the first-ever graduate course in Canada specifically focused on Métis governance. This pioneering course ensures that academic programs are aligned with the unique needs and traditions of the Métis Nation, providing students with unparalleled insights and practical knowledge to effectively contribute to the governance and development of their communities. 

Taken together, these initiatives are not only designed to enhances academic knowledge but also support the broader goals of Métis nation-building and self-governance.
