The College of Family Physicians Canada - Family Medicine Forum 2022

Dr. Megan Clark presented an overview of the TRANS Project, as well as data from the navigators' service usage statistics and the post-navigator service digital survey. Through our research, we concluded that the peer navigators are able to assist Saskatchewan's people who are trans and gender diverse in accessing the healthcare they need and that establishing permanent health navigators in our province would positively impact people who are trans and gender diverse.

The TRANS Project presented three times at the 27th Scientific Symposium for the World Professional Association for Transgender Health!

  • Dr. Megan Clark presented an oral abstract on our reseach identifying the number of PTGD living in Saskatchewan based on administrative data in: Indentification of People Who Are Transgender and Gender-Diverse Within the Saskatchewan Administrative Health Databases.
  • Gwen Rose presented a poster on the preliminary results from our baseline focus groups regarding their healthcare experiences in Saskatchewan.
  • Mel Reid presented a poster reporting the preliminary statstics on the navigator's numbers of contacts and types of services they provided over the pilot study, as well as the satisfaction rates collected from the post-interaction surveys.

The TRANS Project was well recieved and we had so many great discussions with other healthcare providers and people with lived experience who are looking to better healthcare for PTGD across the globe!

Alberta Society for the Promotion of Sexual Health (ASPSH) - 14th Biennial Western Canadian Conference on Sexual Health Synergies of Sexuality: Seeing the Whole Person

Dr. Megan Clark, Ken, James Young, Reann Legge, and Dr. Stéphanie Madill presented the TRANS Project's group processes, successes, challenges, and rewards of working on an interdisciplinary team comprising of people who are trans and gender diverse (TGD), people who work for 2SLGBTQ+ community organisations, healthcare providers, decision makers from the Saskatchewan Health Authority, Ministry of Health, and researchers.

Ken and Elijah discussed the TRANS Project and their roles as Trans Health Navigators, as well as strategies for navigating the health system for medical, surgical, social transitions, supporting people through legal name and gender marker changes, and how loved ones can best support their trans friends and family. 

Ken helped run a clinic for the 2SLGBTQ+ community in which members had a safe and affirming space to receive their COVID-19 vaccines. 

Dr. Megan Clark, Reann Legge, Dr. Stéphanie Madill, and Dr. Lori Schramm presented Trans Research and Navigation Saskatchewan: A Project in Progress to Improve Health for People who are Trans and Gender Diverse for the TRANS Project.

Ken and Eli ran a session was for parents and supports to learn ways to support trans and gender diverse children or loved ones through social, medical, & legal transitions. The Navigators discussed accessing healthcare for puberty blockers, hormone treatment, surgeries, and general care. Navigating gender and transition in schools, social circles, and family settings was also be discussed, in addition to a Q&A and discussion.
