The Global Scientific Consensus on Genetically Modified Crop Risk Assessments

This presentation explores three decades of scientific evidence on the safety and risk assessment of genetically modified (GM) crops. Drawing on more than 4,400 risk assessments conducted across 72 countries since the 1990s, it examines how regulatory authorities have consistently evaluated GM crops in comparison with their conventional counterparts, with no assessments identifying increased risks associated with approved GM crops. The presentation highlights the evolution of GM crop regulation, the extensive evidence supporting their safety, and the challenges created by repeated and sometimes redundant regulatory assessments. It also discusses how greater international cooperation and recognition of existing scientific assessments could reduce regulatory costs and barriers, particularly in resource-constrained and food-insecure countries, facilitating access to agricultural innovations that can contribute to food security and climate resilience.
